Indeed opposites attract: The Relationship between Art and Design

Writer: Reshoketswe MotauReshoketswe Motau

“Design is about making solutions, art is about making questions. In art, you can make something that doesn’t make sense, which is okay. In design you have to make sense.” - John Maeda

Art and design are two characteristically opposite industries however, they do complement each other. For instance, for both to exist, required is some form of interaction between a human entity and the product.

Art is perceived as being more philosophical, it either poses questions to the audience or makes a commentary on the current state of society. Design, on the other hand, seeks to answer questions, by finding solutions to identified problems. And in addition, it tends to propose alternative futures.

They are both very broad subject matters, so focus will be placed on the relationship between visual arts and digital design. Visual art is an art form that evokes emotions, but mainly through sight. It is a subject’s expression of their skill and imagination. Included in this category are painting, drawing, illustration, sculpting, printmaking, photography, installation art. (britannica.com, 2021). Because art realties so much on the artist’s interpretation it does tend to be biased.

With digital design it is hard to release a biased product as it is mainly inspired by the needs of the user, there is a constant need for improvement, because as the world changes, so do the needs of the end-user. Digital design is graphic work that is produced, viewed and accessed solely on digital platforms. It is constantly evolving, and art on the other hand is timeless.
